In fact, the London Tube employs a dedicated, insulated fourth ground rail because the traditional method of using the running rails for grounding caused galvanic corrosion between iron tunnel ring segments and the surrounding earth greatly shortening their lifespans.

    @evdelen@mstdn.ca @Aurora_Bee@deadinsi.de That's an extremely niche edge case solution for a very specific problem stemming from the need to keep ancient technology working, namely iron tunnels. It's not even used on the whole London underground system. Mainline rail with catenary uses the rails as ground. That's just a given.
