I also joined, then led, then managed a critical safety software team the wrote software landing manned aircraft. And Intaught programming. I can’t talk about my grades because I only took physical science and math courses. And I was a solid C student. While I can say I did all that, I will also say it’s rare. For the most part, software interviewing is a masculinized in-crowd gatekeeping exercise. It’s not that things like grades (and courses and trivia and coding-style…) matter, it’s that they are usually more evidence that you are not One Of Us. That make it so hard for people, especially woman and BIPOC (like me) to break through the gates.
