I see a version of MIT expat in the project root, but there's no details as to which files that applies to (if any) or license headers in the source files.

There are Luarocks bundled in the distribution tarball and those would be governed by their respective licenses which I believe are in the Luarocks metadata, which is also in the tarball. You bring up an excellent point here. Next release will more explicitly separate my MIT license code from the bundled dependencies.
