I travelled to Iran in 2011 -- quite a while ago now, but essentially in the current era. My friend had become obsessed with the ancient Persian empire and desperately wanted to visit Iran; her wife at the time was like “I'm not going to a place where I have to wear hijab”, and my friend was like “I'll ask JA, she'll go anywhere” which was basically true. So she found a British company that organized custom tours, and I went along for the ride.

Most people in the US have no clue about Iran. They might confuse it with Iraq. They might be confused about why I use the terms Persia and Iran almost interchangeably. They might meet people of Iranian descent and never realize it, even when they have a surname that mirrors a Persian place name. I say all that with confidence because before I went there on my friend's instigation, I also had no clue. 3 of 7
