Most people in the US have no clue about Iran. They might confuse it with Iraq. They might be confused about why I use the terms Persia and Iran almost interchangeably. They might meet people of Iranian descent and never realize it, even when they have a surname that mirrors a Persian place name. I say all that with confidence because before I went there on my friend's instigation, I also had no clue. 3 of 7

    The thing about visiting Iran as a US American is that, yes, the government is hostile. As two middle-aged women, we got hassled just a bit on entry -- nothing significant compared to what less privileged people routinely go through, certainly nothing like the risk of entering the US recently. Driving around Tehran, there are murals that say “Death to America” or show the Statue of Liberty as a death's head. All very dramatic. 4 of 7
