RE: https://pdx.social/@dadbod/116437799506135617 I got my Kobo, like, 15 years ago, didn't power it up for nearly a decade, and when I went to use it again I connected it to my Wi-Fi and it was *still* receiving updates.

@icefoxx@yiff.life My Kobo Mini is one of a very few models they’ve actually discontinued. And yet I installed the Kobo Glo firmware on it and now it’s fully up to date. The actual unit itself is starting to degrade (rubber coating and brittle plastics) but it’s still going. You can even turn it into a TRMNL device 😄

  • @icefoxx@yiff.life I got an old kobo at the surplus store and I've been genuinely impressed they even leave old firmware versions on their website so you can still download updates after they shut the servers off

@icefoxx@yiff.life I've had a kindle for ages and I use koreader, I've never used the "amazon store" I had to turn off a bunch of telemetry bs even though it's linux, it felt back then like installing windows 11 feels today. gross and weird. still, nice screen, cheap, and I can play zork on there. wouldn't buy a new one
