As long as you don't need ends to be hugely load bearing - I use old brake / gear cable and crimp on a male and female electrical connector.
For waxing a chain I use a jumbo paper clip straightened out with a closed loop at one end and a hook at other. I feed every twelfth (? Never counted) link over hook and end up with a square of back and forth chain. I then just hang with twine tied round both loop and hook

@MatthewNewell@mastodon.social Oooooh. Hadn't thought of a giant paperclip. I'm effectively trying to replicate what Silca charges a tenner for, given that I don't think a bit of wire stuck on a small dowel is worth ten quid.
