So anyway, in case someone googles "Hilbert transform" and ends up here, you do an FFT, then you shift the phase of the signal 90° in the frequency domain, then you do an inverse FFT. That's the Q part of your I/Q signal. The I is just your initial samples as-is.

I didn't understand it quite right — this is how you do it. On the plot is the real color subcarrier I put through this thing, with its Q counterpart (in green) and its envelope (in red). (probably the first time I actually had to work with complex numbers outside of university math classes)
