So, prompted by some posts and recent advertising I reached out to my pharmacist regarding the shingles vaccine, which is recommended as I had chicken pox as a child and am now entering my serious 50’s. It’s 360$ for the two shots. Bizarrely he said the per-shot price is 180, then explained it was a 2-shot process. So that was weird. But mainly I’m annoyed by a system that would rather let me get sick & pay to have me treat the sickness rather than pay to have me avoid the sickness entirely.

@cautionwip@mstdn.ca I'm assuming you are talking about Shingrix. Some company plans cover it and some don't. My company insurance didn't and my wife's insurance did. There is a cheaper thou less effective shot that may be covered, check with your doctor. Our doctor recommended the Twinrix if covered by insurance.

@cautionwip@mstdn.ca I'm in exactly the same headspace, at the same time, for the same reason. 🤬

@cautionwip@mstdn.ca another thing I don’t understand is why you have to be 50+ to get the vaccine. Why not offer it earlier? I know several people that have had it before the age of 50, it would be better to catch it before it happens. Makes no sense. I’m in my 40s and would like to get the vaccine now, before it happens.

@cautionwip@mstdn.ca It's a big hit but I paid to get that done. Really don't want to get hit with Shingles. I had to pay $400/shot for my semi-annual Prolia shot to avoid further issues with osteoporosis. Luckily, the provincial insurance for seniors seems to cover it. I know it cost the system a lot of cash when I was hospitalized for 3 days, waiting to get my shattered wrist repaired! However, medication coverage is separately, and privately funded.

@cautionwip@mstdn.ca Even if you get the shingles vaccine, that doesn't mean that you still won't get shingles. Check up on that.
