Some people call us “too sensitive.” But if the lights harm us, they harm us. Why moralise it? If the noise overwhelms us. it overwhelms us. If surprise plans dysregulate us, they dysregulate us. Expressing needs isn’t a problem. The problem is being expected to pretend what harms us doesn’t.

@theautisticcoach@neurodifferent.me They ban and punish and shame us for being 'too sensitive'. To have something 'too much' is to have a comparison to something that isnt too much. I feel like the typicals are not sensitive enough, as if they are numb. Lights have hurt my eyes since before I could reach the light switch. Problems can be comparisons, expectations, and trying to fit everyone into neat little boxes.

@theautisticcoach@neurodifferent.me I've gotten into the habit of saying "It's a thing I experience, not a character flaw." Sometimes that shuts them up. It's hard to argue with lived experience (and if they try, they don't deserve my company).

@theautisticcoach@neurodifferent.me Me on some nights, sat in the pub with a friend. Him: "Right, are you coming round the Bear? will be there." Me: "Nah. Have a good night." Him: "Aw go on. It's quiet and boring here." Me: "Exactly!"
