you can use them for texturing, as shown in some of the photos in the thread, or as lights as shown in other photos. there are probably lots of other options too!
if you want to find vacuum formed structures for use like this, search for "vacuum form trays"

another old trick for cool scifi vibes is to use Frank Lloyd Wright's Ennis House. the tile work is iconic, and you can see the house used as Deckard's apartment in Blade Runner or you could do what Babylon 5 did, and make glowing plastic tile recreations for columns!
