If you choose a heuristic substitute, then you should also understand that abstraction will always leak, and causal power/authority will always converge to its actual executors. A normal brain has only one predictive model/self/personality, and nothing else, because we only have one body that we can control.
Marx's basic assumption of materialism is non-materialistic; humans do not exist in a pre-alienated state; alienation is the process of existence itself.

A normal brain and all related nervous/feedback systems are enough to control individual humans, of trillions of cells and 70+ organs. Marx's theory of alienation is of estrangement from self interest. This fits in to @tao@mathstodon.xyz comment of large groups, and I said these groups control the production society needs for its own gain, yet uses society for the operation of said production. We are subjected by them
