And what do you put on your resume. "Put in 5000 hours developing GIMP!" "Proficient in GIMP!"
And the companies - donate to RedHat? Sure. Donate to Fedora? Sure. Donate to GIMP?
Why do so many people refuse to see this obvious, obvious issue. It's not theoretical, it's why GIMP died.

@Craigp@mastodon.social Do not interpret this as me defending the name, but you have wildly successful projects with questionable names like git and MongoDB. Stating with confidence GIMP died because of the name doesn't help your argument.

@Craigp@mastodon.social my friend is a teacher and a few years ago (there are more free options now) he was bemoaning that he couldn't teach image editing because "Mr ___ went on the internet and showed us a GIMP" would be the fast track to a different career
