I have a subset of that that I think about regularly: My grandparents were born when conservative middle class girls did _not_ wear much makeup, maybe no identifiable makeup depending on where you lived. Progressives allowed some but it was fun-scandalous, not fun-neutral. By the time I was a tween, this had flipped completely; conservative women *had* to wear visible full face.
