I want to make an open source game series that anybody can make sequels to any time without licensing or permission. Tired of games dying because companies decide to just shelve the IP for literal decades. #gamedev #indiedev #freeculture #foss

@Moosader@mastodon.gamedev.place This is honestly a brilliant idea. The other thing that bothers me is when fans work for years on a good sequel or other title in a franchise and it's brilliant but litigious companies shut them down.

  • @Moosader@mastodon.gamedev.place one thing I really love about Zun/Touhou is that he opened it up for fans to do whatever they want, even commercially, with the only restrictions being attribution and no redistribution of his commercial games. It turned what would have been a few really good games into an internationally recognized series more popular as a whole than most AAA series where anyone can add their own games/characters/animations/etc One recent "fan" game that blew me away https://store.steampowered.com/app/2248430/Touhou_Artificial_Dream_in_Arcadia/

  • @Moosader@mastodon.gamedev.place I believe the eclipse phase ttrpg has an open license so technically you can make a game in that universe without anyone to say no

@Moosader@mastodon.gamedev.place honestly even for commercial games there should be a law that requires FLOSS release of assets and code if the vendor decided to drop the game for any reason.
