@cinebox@masto.hackers.town saying that, I’ve worked on systems for that (albeit for use in combined sewage outflows) and they use an ultrasonic thing that reflects off the water. They ping every couple of minutes. Last a few years on battery transmitting over cellular.

    @ret@furry.engineer yeah the problem is then you need to place it where its over the water at all times. Reservoirs tend to be really shallow slope-wise

    @ret@furry.engineer @cinebox@masto.hackers.town While water level is also one of my guesses, the lack of an cellular antenna, as you describe it also puzzles me. Addidionally, i would've located this device next to the weir/valves (except if the reservoir is of a size where you may need to measure on multiple sides). As to how, i'd guess they'd use a bubbler (http://freefall.purrsia.com/ff4400/fc04314.htm has a nice explanation). Maybe they just log level/temp/quality/what-ever for scientifical reasons w/o real time transmitting
