I’ve perfected the art of staring intently at my left shoe while subtly shifting my chair backward, as if the act of tying an already tied lace requires my full attention and both hands. And if the chairperson’s gaze lingers too long, I’ve been known to mutter, 'I’d love to, but I’m currently the bottleneck on three other critical projects.' Works every time... until it doesn’t.

Allows one to slip elegantly out of the noose. Oh, and by the way, never again will I attend a meeting in slip-on shoes and try to pretend I'm lacing them.
