That's the whole point of processes and memory protection: to virtualize the CPU, memory, and other shared hardware resources.
Running everything in a hypervisor is just processes with extra steps. And when everybody starts demanding all the fancy features and performance tricks you'll currently find in the Linux kernel, which you know they will, we'll end up right back here, having expended titanic effort and accomplished nothing.

@argv_minus_one@mastodon.sdf.org I made particular mention of capabilities and language-based security in my rant for a reason. They could actually provide safety and adequate performance even on hardware that doesn't do memory isolation of any sort.
