The number one sign that bicycling is a hobby is whether or not they own a car with a bicycle rack, especially one that is permanently mounted. I don't own a car with a bicycle rack, because my bicycle is literally my transportation. My bicycle isn't a hobby, so I don't transport my bicycle to where I ride it. I leave my house on my bicycle, and return to my house on my bicycle. That wasn't always true. I used to own an elaborate Thule rack system mounted to my 1993 VW Passat and 2001 Jetta.

Back then, bicycling was definitely a hobby for me, although, even after we moved out of Center City Philadelphia to the NJ suburbs in 1997 and bought the Passat, there was still only one car between the two of us. So I still rode my mother's old Nishiki the 6 miles to work pretty often, since my ex worked on the other side of Philadelphia, out in Conshohocken. My mother has MS, so she couldn't ride anymore, but since I didn't have a bicycle when we moved to the 'burbs, she gave me hers.
