@argv_minus_one@mastodon.sdf.org @quinn@social.circl.lu @apz@some.apz.fi Truth.. I was able to get to supercomputers before the “internet” as we know it existed with hardware I built from radio shack early 80s. I got my career in supercomputers because I started figuring stuff out when other people said I should be playing with dolls. Has the internet always been a hive of scum and villainy? Yes. I point you to Usenet. Has it also been how millions of kids found help, advice, tech specs and encouragement? Also, yes. Malevolent algorithms are the problem. Dark patterns are the problem when it comes to the absolutely documentable harm being enacted upon children. Less studies with N=xxx have been done on adults, so data is sparse, but causation does seem to be behind the correlation in this case. This is industrial psychology warfare on the populace, and it should be stopped, but age verification is a smokescreen.

  • @MissConstrue@mefi.social Not just a smokescreen. It threatens to make alternatives like Linux and Mastodon illegal and thereby deny us any escape. I wish I had cause for optimism here, but I am very, very, very scared. @quinn@social.circl.lu @apz@some.apz.fi
