@thatfrisiangirlish@blahaj.zone I think even in my angry atheist stage I always saw organised religion as a vector for injustice, and not the actual form of it. I remember arguing with other atheists that "yeah, but, plenty of horrible things have been done by secular governments too, even ones that are anti-religious", and the sheer mental gymnastics that prompted in response. Everything could be traced back to religion, I was told, and if we got rid of that, all injustice would somehow evaporate. That's an unfounded belief that struck me as ironically cultlike.

@Tattie@eldritch.cafe @thatfrisiangirlish@blahaj.zone Yup. I tend to point to russia as an example. The religion was quite effectively neuterer back there over the 20th century, and yet there are still plenty of bigots and their arguments are almost identical to the ones you'd hear from the ones in the west. Just without any "it is said in the bible" padding.

  • @Tattie@eldritch.cafe I love that. My own atheist phase was very angry (as coming connected with a thorough investigation into Christianity and separating myself from my pastor father), and bleak. I have come to understand personally that an amount of unfounded belief is necessary for a humane society to function, but needs to serve ideas like justice. Thus holding unfounded beliefs is not a defect, but a function of the minds in a social species. And that is prone to abuse, even if not the purpose - like organs in a body can become infected and malfunction.
