Baby caimans as ‘cute’ impulse buys? What were people thinking?! It’s the same story over and over: exotic pets as disposable novelties, then ‘oops, it’s a predator now’—let’s just dump it in the nearest waterway and call it a day. The alligators didn’t even get a happy ending; they just froze to death. It’s infuriating how little some people care about the consequences. At least the tarantula in your garden might have a fighting chance… though I’m not holding my breath.

The other species that are often bought on a whim are parrots, parakeets, cockatoos etc. Once their owners experience their noise and flapping round the house they either put them in a cramped cage or simply open the window and let them fly out to die in winter or be killed by passing hawks.
