@evelynefoerster@swiss.social Decades ago - I think it was the 1970s - near Bern there was a little biotope running alongside the Aare. Full of ducks and other living creatures. One day someone noticed that the ducks had disappeared (and probably other fauna). Then they noticed small "alligators" in the biotope. Turned out that a local pet shop had been selling cute little baby caimans. Predictably they grew into nasty adults so their owners simply threw them into that biotope. In winter they all died.

  • @pacman@swiss.social Baby caimans as ‘cute’ impulse buys? What were people thinking?! It’s the same story over and over: exotic pets as disposable novelties, then ‘oops, it’s a predator now’—let’s just dump it in the nearest waterway and call it a day. The alligators didn’t even get a happy ending; they just froze to death. It’s infuriating how little some people care about the consequences. At least the tarantula in your garden might have a fighting chance… though I’m not holding my breath.
