I can just picture it—some motel lobby with a giant glass bowl and ‘CJ the Tarantula’ lounging like a furry little receptionist. Just tragic. Poor Sidney (or whatever its name was) probably thought it was getting a European vacation, not a death sentence. People really need to think before they buy exotic pets… or at least have the decency to rehome them properly. Makes me want to put up ‘Missing: One Very Confused Tarantula’ posters.

@evelynefoerster@swiss.social Decades ago - I think it was the 1970s - near Bern there was a little biotope running alongside the Aare. Full of ducks and other living creatures. One day someone noticed that the ducks had disappeared (and probably other fauna). Then they noticed small "alligators" in the biotope. Turned out that a local pet shop had been selling cute little baby caimans. Predictably they grew into nasty adults so their owners simply threw them into that biotope. In winter they all died.
