If you’ve never encountered that world, you only know about the Peter Thiels. A lot of VCs are also not mega rich billionaires. They come in all stripes. There are a lot of people out there parceling out $200k, $50k, even $10k of funding to people who are working toward causes they believe in.

    @sysop408@sfba.social I don't like the insinuation that people only have issues with VCs out of ignorance. Many people dislike them specifically because of their experiences with the perverse incentives many of them create. But I agree that this is the wrong distinction. After all, plenty of businesses are wholly privately owned by genocidal maniacs.

    @sysop408@sfba.social it's probably more about the system that causes there to be a few people who have hundreds of thousands of dollars to toss at causes they believe in, and the unaccountable power that that arrangement inherently gives them
