@Greg@social.coop I’m a pro trained stick dropper. My main issue with the low end stuff is that the racks are so small ALL the drums are functionally in front of you so you never learn to move to your second floor tom. Anything mesh head with midi on it can get plugged into a laptop with software of your choice and sound amazing though innit.

@Greg@social.coop @CelloMomOnCars@mastodon.social If you are in as close circumstances as an apartment it can still be an issue bothering neighbors; whacking on and kicking batches of rubber triggers still can make a disturbance that travels though walls, ceiling and floors. Some of the less expensive e-kits have a smaller foot print and faster set up however.

@Greg@social.coop I have an old Roland v-drums kit and it fits neatly into a corner of my fairly small bedroom! The v-drums series is still fairly well reviewed these days so I think they’re worth looking at.

@Greg@social.coop I've been looking myself, actually I haven't used them yet but I've heard really good things about the Alesis Nitro line, for the price. @Greg@social.coop also not a drummer, but I picked up a second-hand Roland TD-17 kit for kidlet to learn on. A work colleague who *is* a drummer also has a TD-17 kit, and rates it highly. Kidlets' drum teacher also has a TD-17 kit. I tried out a lower-end Alesis kit that someone else had, and it's good, but to my non-drummer hands the Roland felt nicer to use.

@Greg@social.coop seconding the Roland V-Drums TD-17 as a good option as I own one. I play both acoustic and electric, the electric drums will never measure up to acoustic if you’re looking to play certain genres of music (eg jazz), but for a beginner just getting started I think it’s totally fine.

@Greg@social.coop I will definitely third the suggestion of the TD-17! I bought the TD-17KV back during lockdown in mid-2021 and I'd never played anything but Guitar Hero drums before. 🤣 It's purely a fun hobby but I really like it, I have no comparison for an actual acoustic drum kit but I've been able to slowly upgrade the various parts as I got better.

@Greg@social.coop I love my Roland TD-07 kit! Mesh heads > rubber pads I use the MIDI connection to control Addictive Drums 2 in Reaper. I'm happier with the responsiveness just using the built-in kits, but I like recording the MIDI versions of songs to tweak, rearrange, etc.

@Greg@social.coop My ten-year old is learning to drum on an Alesis Nitro Mesh kit, and it's going very well. It's much cheaper than the corresponding Roland product, but it does the job perfectly. The kid, the teacher, and I are all happy. (Fun fact: The office that manages the Alesis brand is here, in little Rhode Island! The company's history is otherwise mostly associated with California and China.)
