@Greg@social.coop also not a drummer, but I picked up a second-hand Roland TD-17 kit for kidlet to learn on. A work colleague who *is* a drummer also has a TD-17 kit, and rates it highly. Kidlets' drum teacher also has a TD-17 kit. I tried out a lower-end Alesis kit that someone else had, and it's good, but to my non-drummer hands the Roland felt nicer to use.
