@seachaint@masto.hackers.town @rra@post.lurk.org I'd be interested to see whether there's benefits to dithering on the viewing device side as well. I suppose at this point, they're at the point where they can also provide the option to switch to the full-res images, so maybe the dithering is "good enough" for their use case.

  • @GigaByte4711@whitespashe.uk @rra@post.lurk.org In my own unscientific noodling with posterisation I found that for *some* kinds of image it does provide a large compression benefit, but it wasn't worth being so strict that you'd notice much. E.g., a photo of a page of handwriting responded very well because there were many horizontal lines of nearly-white - even light posterisation reduced large sections of the image to the same shade of white and compressed them well. When the pixels aren't contiguous, less benefit.
