@GigaByte4711@whitespashe.uk @rra@post.lurk.org In my own unscientific noodling with posterisation I found that for *some* kinds of image it does provide a large compression benefit, but it wasn't worth being so strict that you'd notice much. E.g., a photo of a page of handwriting responded very well because there were many horizontal lines of nearly-white - even light posterisation reduced large sections of the image to the same shade of white and compressed them well. When the pixels aren't contiguous, less benefit.

    @seachaint@masto.hackers.town @rra@post.lurk.org They talk about having the option to switch to full-res where it makes sense here: https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com/2023/06/rebuilding-a-solar-powered-website/ I suppose having the dithering by default saves space/time/power and the fallback lets people view originals when it makes sense.
