my involvement with linux and open source started when i was, like, 12. i remember excitedly upgrading to slackware 9. within a year or two of that i had all the computers in my house running as linux thin clients with a centralized NFS homedir fileserver and NIS/YP for login auth. i taught myself networking by building an OpenMOSIX/Kerrighed SSI HPC cluster (all three nodes of it lol) in high school
if the stance of the open source community at the time was some arbitrary "you must be 16+ to engage with us" BS i probably would have fucked off entirely and became a windows server admin, lol. that environment was already so mired in elitism and that kind of ageism would have pushed me away entirely

@qualia@floofy.tech For me this is in particular ironic, because the first distro I installed myself was openSuSE, when I was like 14yo. They truly are pulling the ladder up with them. If there had been shit like this everywhere I would have likely just continued on with windows only and maybe experimented with opensolaris or freebsd instead of various linux distros.
