Loving Rob Weychert’s latest article about using variable fonts to achieve consistent stroke widths across type and screen sizes. And he extends it to icons too, making them feel like part of the same system, something I’ve always struggled with (the comparison to fineliner pens is spot on). @jasonsantamaria@typo.social but what’s the point? The author’s own illustrations show that this approach is fallacious: the smaller fonts of course look much heavier *at the same absolute stroke weight* than the taller ones – because they enclose much smaller portions of white, among other causes. What am I missing here?

@jasonsantamaria@typo.social Awesome stuff. I tried to do something similar in the past but couldn’t get it working reliably with calc, probably because I didn’t know about pow(). So many cool new techniques/tools came out during the decade or so I was focussed on non-web design work, I have so much catching up to do! Thanks for sharing.
