I’m not saying this to pick on any one UI paradigm, or software, or stack, or company. But to say that if you work on UI/UX, you need to be aware that the majority of what you use on a PC, server or mobile vehicle is light-years behind what professional domain-specific interfaces can do, and it’s maybe worth examining why, and how it’s gotten this way.

@s0@cathode.church Reminds me of the Blender UI. After using it for a while, "it makes sense". But the first and second steps feel like "why didn't they find an easier way to do this?", simply because it uses different concepts compared to most WIMP interfaces.

@s0@cathode.church am designing a lighting system from scratch and personally think a UI rethink is in order, good UI as a concept is a very circular argument based on personal preference imo.. I also think all of apples UI "rules" are largely silly.. That said I firmly believe you when you say this UI is extremely refined for the specific demographic who use it.

@s0@cathode.church not doing much lightning stuff, but was fighting a MagicQ console again last weekend, and it's not intuitive to me. The thing that makes it nice to work with in comparison to doing stiff on the PC are all the dials and faders, which make a nice, physical UX. Turning dials with a mouse in the PC version on the other hand...

@s0@cathode.church I understand your point - but what is the domain of an operating system? Is VMS any better than unix? In terms of automation and customization capabilities Windows was lightyears behind any Unix system and yet doing a bad job at the core domain. I think the problem is that the domain is very loosely defined and it's hard to agree on a good solution (see DE idioms and all the text purist approaches)
