People assume my partner "does computers" for a job because I do. He has a job title that is confusing and not very revealing but I tell people that he mostly "does spreadsheets." This nice profile of him from the student newspaper (so I'm not burying the lede: AT HARVARD) is a great way to get to know a few neat things about him. https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2025/11/27/james-poolner-profile/

  • @jessamyn@glammr.us the whole higher ed sector is being demolished in Canada so that includes the admin jobs. Minimum-wage jobs with a lot of free time to read vanished from Canada a while ago too (as did skilled jobs in the same space like movie projectionist).

@jessamyn@glammr.us hmm the beard says Unix but the hoodie says Gnome. I guess I'll just have to read the feature

@jessamyn@glammr.us Nice! The bit about the guitar is kinda hilarious.

@jessamyn@glammr.us I didn't make it through the first paragraph yet, but I'm also a bifurcated James/Jamie for work reasons ;)

@jessamyn@glammr.us I appreciate that while my person has a comp sci bachelor's and can therefore understand my rants, he's mostly not a computers person and mostly a "teaching kids to think about how they think" person. I also think your person and my person might get along if they ever met.
