Addendum - It's worth noting that racism is also what motivates the destruction of the social safety net in the U.S. It isn't an innocent accident of policy that jobs are tied to health insurance and many other benefits, and black folks are often "first fired, last hired". It isn't an accident that the "welfare queen" stereotype is a black woman, and then white folks vote their own rights away. Racism harms both the oppressed and the oppressor. Real social change must address it.

    @scarlet@plush.city I remember someone summing up anti-safety-net voting as "politicians convincing people to vote to harm themselves so that they can harm the target of their (the voters') bigotries even more", and the more I learn about things, the more that seems to consistently be true :cat_frown: I always appreciate your informative posts, but thank you especially for this one :hug_love:
