There's this idea that Martin Luther King showed up, everyone sat and listened to a speech, then magically things were desegregated. That idea is false. The history of America runs in bands of alternating violence, progress, and badly thought out compromises. It's that last one that I'm most afraid of at this point. 14/20

    See, I think that things have gotten pretty bad right now, and I'm not sure if anything other than a major structural shift is going to work to undo what's been happening here. My mom was born during the Civil Rights era and had a chance to see a bit of the before and a lot of the after. I guess what I'm saying is that she's seen some fucking shit. All the stuff happening now? It's been and can be worse. There's things that can and should be done to change course. 15/20

    @scarlet@plush.city I remember in one of my high school elective classes, we had a whole class session just watching TV interviews from parents while school integration was happening. The amount of white people willing to take work off and protest a black kid going to the same school as their kid blew my mind. And the fact that they were *actually scared*. Like they actually thought that integrated elementary schools would bring about the collapse of society
