My mom shouldn't have to live, today, in the same state of fear that characterized her childhood growing up in the Civil Rights era, but I do think that she can see the similarities in this moment of time to so many other dark periods in history.
The U.S. doesn't really teach the history of race relations very well, and certainly not how the Civil Rights era actually unfolded.

There's this idea that Martin Luther King showed up, everyone sat and listened to a speech, then magically things were desegregated. That idea is false. The history of America runs in bands of alternating violence, progress, and badly thought out compromises. It's that last one that I'm most afraid of at this point. 14/20
