This morning when I was talking with my mom and the stories were being shared of what was happening to people in my family that were suddenly getting pushed out of jobs, she said something. She said, "I guess we'll have to go back to how it used to be with white folks. We'll need to do things in secret, stay below them and keep out of sight, and build for ourselves without them. We'll build for us and keep ourselves safe." 12/20

    My mom shouldn't have to live, today, in the same state of fear that characterized her childhood growing up in the Civil Rights era, but I do think that she can see the similarities in this moment of time to so many other dark periods in history. The U.S. doesn't really teach the history of race relations very well, and certainly not how the Civil Rights era actually unfolded. 13/20
