Finally throwing together a GNOME Shell extension that I have always been surprised didn’t exist: showing Background Apps directly on the top bar. Like status icons, but still using the modern cross-desktop APIs.
Idk if I’ll publish this (I don’t actually want to use it personally!), but it was kind of a fun thing to poke at. I do want dynamic action support for the background portal/GNOME Shell somehow, though, as that would basically give us feature parity with old school status icons.

For reference, this is just a different presentation of what’s been supported in vanilla GNOME Shell for several releases, now, in the Background Apps menu.
