@julian @ozoned @logaldeveloper@infosec.exchange which hot pot place did you end up at? 👀 I wound up chatting by the registration desk for a while 😅

Getting ready to submit a pretty dope panel to GDC 2027 (yes, already!). I have confirmed panelists from big, medium, and little organizations coming together to talk about why open source is awesome, specifically for keeping your gamers and community members safe. There’s absolutely at least a couple of names you’ll recognize. 👀 Hopefully it's accepted! 🤞 #GDC #GDC27

I’m headed to FOSSY and Fedicon in BC, Canada in just a couple of short days! I look forward to catching up with folks, learning a bunch, and chatting about both @roost@hachyderm.io and @gnome@floss.social. Come find me! https://2026.fossy.ca/ #FOSSY #FOSSY2026 #Fedicon #Fedicon2026 #OpenSource #TrustAndSafety

We miiiiight be able to sneak in a pretty substantial change to GNOME Shell in time for the next release: moving the search results to an overlay instead of taking over the screen. It’s more spatial (the search results come from somewhere instead of just… taking over) but for light style users like me: it should actually be more accessible, too! One more step on the path to a proper light style Shell. NOTE: lots of style issues remain in this prototype! #GNOME #GNOMEdesign #GNOMEshell

My essentially single-user Mastodon server is becoming more expensive to run on @mastohost@mastodon.social without doing some cleanup. My problem is that I don’t actually know how/what to clean up. Early on I used relays to improve federation; I think there’s a TON of data in the db from that which could just be purged, but I don’t want to accidentally lose any user data. A couple of years ago we did run `tootctl statuses remove` but I might have still had a relay enabled more recently. #Mast...

Since @TangerineUI@nileane.fr has been discontinued, I threw a simple little custom stylesheet together. It’s a lot less ambitious, but was a bit inspired by some of the visual changes, namely: • Swapped the column order on desktop • Post content is inset to make avatars stand out a bit more • Things are more rounded • A lot more colorful, especially in dark style Technically you can set any `--color-accent` in the CSS and the rest of the style should adapt. https://gist.github.com/cassidyjam...

How am I just now finding out about the Style Editor in Firefox?? I always struggled to write styles directly in the inspector, especially when I wanted to copy-paste things back and forth a lot… but you can just append a whole freeform stylesheet and have it apply live! 🤯 #Firefox #devTools

RE: https://mastodon.social/@simple_sabotage/116655058624456803 I think this is part of what drives me crazy with LLM-powered code review: too often it feels like they’re following the US counterintelligence strategy for simple sabotage. Except I’m the target.

Ah, the American healthcare system. “Your doctor has diagnosed you and determined the best treatment to help you be a functional adult. Here is your prescription for 30 days. It is ILLEGAL for us to give you any more than this. We also will not fill another prescription for this medication until 30 days has passed. When you do fill it, we’ll take two weeks to restock it. By the way it costs two thousand dollars. Except use this piece of paper and it costs $50.”

There’s been a ton of work going into Coop, the open source moderation/review dashboard from @roost, in order for it to be used by real T&S teams to protect real people from online harms. I’m proud of how the team has taken a massive, complex SaaS startup product and turned it into an open source project you can run locally or deploy somewhere like on GitHub Codespace to demo in about 20 mins—maybe faster if you don’t talk as much as me. 😅 https://www.youtube.com/live/6M5I-FOoOgg #Ope...

I just saw that Mozilla is retiring the Mozilla Location Service which provides an open, crowdsourced alternative to proprietary location services from Google and other vendors. 😰 https://github.com/mozilla/ichnaea/issues/2065 This is used by GNOME and thus Fedora, Ubuntu, Endless OS, etc. to help provide OS-level location services without requiring every app to implement its own. And apparently a patent troll is part of the reason Mozilla stopped investing in it. 🙃 #OpenSource #Linux #GNOME...

I remember there being multiple big pushes for adaptive UI on Android at the platform/toolkit level. I thought a big part of that was that multi-layered list interfaces would automatically adapt to a two-column layout on larger displays… so why do apps keep looking like this? Is the Mastodon app just not using the platform APIs correctly here? #Mastodon #Android

RE: https://mastodon.blaede.family/@nora/116567766251775735 Listening to Nora’s “I like this song” playlist—songs that @katie and I have played from our own playlists or radio that Nora liked—she kept saying “Wait for it… wait for it!” when her favorite part of a song was coming. This led to me introducing the concept of “the drop,” and now deadmau5 is on her playlist. 😆

LLMs aren’t conscious, even if giant companies incentivized to keep up the charade continue to name features after human experiences. LLMs are designed to trick you into thinking they’re conscious and human-like. They’ve encapsulated the worst qualities in the process: they know nothing and don’t think, yet they appear to be confident while outputting falsehoods. They output that they’re smart because they regurgitate the likely text response of being told they’re smart. https://www.wired.com/s...

Friendly reminder that Signal—while maybe not perfect—is a much better choice for communication than RCS, especially if you are communicating anything sensitive. Doubly true if you are on iOS or communicating with anyone who is, as Apple still does not even use end-to-end encryption for RCS like Google does on Android. https://signal.org/download/

Finally throwing together a GNOME Shell extension that I have always been surprised didn’t exist: showing Background Apps directly on the top bar. Like status icons, but still using the modern cross-desktop APIs. Idk if I’ll publish this (I don’t actually want to use it personally!), but it was kind of a fun thing to poke at. I do want dynamic action support for the background portal/GNOME Shell somehow, though, as that would basically give us feature parity with old school status icons.

It’s really tiring hearing the, “open source is bad for security!” argument whenever it pops up, but especially in domains that *have a lot of work to be done* when it comes to adopting open source, like LLMs and AI models. Being MORE open is not the problem here. Opening up the weights and releasing under open licenses does not suddenly create security vulnerabilities, unless you believe solely in security through obscurity—which, I’m sorry, the tech industry has moved on from for the better.

This is just a small peek at the absolutely reckless insanity that Bitcoin has unleashed upon our world. I used to be neutral about crypto-currencies, but I think they’ve done far more damage than the good they could ever actually achieve. IMHO it’s downright irresponsible to dabble in crypto at this point, as it’s been such a massive destruction of resources and our planet for no real-world, day-to-day benefit. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/09/business/bitcoin-mining-electricity-pollution.h...

You can just write a *little* blog post, too. “It’s great to have a place to share your thoughts. A place you can go back to when you want to remember something you had written or thought about before. A place you can refer people to when they have questions you’ve answered in the past. A place to be you. So, get a blog...
