If I was asking this question the justification would be either smalltalk/bonding or finding out more about the person. In a social setting that's expected.
Why would the question itself make the other person uncomfortable? It's straightforward. Even the implication that drinking is normal is at least somewhat correct in that it's considered normal.

@maggiejk@zeroes.ca @digichelle@hachyderm.io It's an interesting point that if they wanted you to know they'd've said it themselves. But this is not always the case. This might just be a way of making conversation. And even if they would be OK with explaining, they might not say it outright because they assume the other person isn't interested in the background. Also, some people might have difficulty or reluctance to say things that are important. If you know them well it might be ok to ask further.
