It's an interesting point that if they wanted you to know they'd've said it themselves. But this is not always the case. This might just be a way of making conversation. And even if they would be OK with explaining, they might not say it outright because they assume the other person isn't interested in the background. Also, some people might have difficulty or reluctance to say things that are important. If you know them well it might be ok to ask further.
