@heinragas@mublog.nl @gabboman maybe i feel on a subjective level that VLC is *already* in the practical, swiss-army-knife, "it gets the job done" category of software, based on the huge number of features in it that nobody i know use yet still feel good to have around? i don't feel like i could ever make a case that VLC is an elegant, tiny program that does one thing and does it well: it does millions of things and it's buggy but overall the best general choice. adding one more feature seems natural!

@jk@mastodon.social @gabboman But nothing is free. There is finite time and development capacity. "Just one more feature" is not only the time to build it, but also to test it, and the maintenance to keep it working across time and across video codecs. And in the time required to build that one feature, you can't build other stuff -- features that might be more important or more aligned with the core purpose of the software. Choosing to do something is also a choice not to do other things. 1/
