@jk@mastodon.social But VLC already deals with all of the chaos of reality: they play every single video format! That is no small feat. They do it without the need of external codec packs, cross-platform. That is an amazing feat of engineering.
To me, that is the _core_ "value proposition" of VLC. And that means that the software cannot (natively) implement anything that violates that core value proposition. If it doesn't work for all video formats, it doesn't belong in VLC. 1/

@jk@mastodon.social Many users give examples of software where it _does_ work, but that software can make certain assumptions about the data/codec that VLC cannot make. Some use cases simply can't be serviced in a general-purpose piece of software, and require a specific piece of software that can accommodate that. In my day job, I frequently reject feature requests like this, because they would violate the core assumptions of our product. We just can't afford to do that. 2/2
