In Europe, like the rest of the world, you can get generic Aspirin for much cheaper than name-brand. But you have to specify the chemical name, acetylsalicylic acid. In German: Acetylsalicylsäure. But that's too hard to say, so everyone uses the acronym ASS. And it's over the counter only. So you go to your drugstore and your gotta say "hey man, I need some ass tablets." And that's why everyone buys name-brand Aspirin instead.

@sixohsix@icosahedron.website That’s not a Europe thing, that’s a Germany thing. In the Netherlands you can buy it in regular shops. Or well, regular shops would be allowed to sell it, but normal supermarkets don’t, because they have the usually much more sensible paracetamol and ibuprofen on their shelves which you should prefer in any case if what you want is a painkiller. (ASS has applications, primarily if you want a blood-thinner, for example to reduce the risk of thrombosis, but as a painkiller it is kinda really not the preferred thing anymore.)

  • @sixohsix@icosahedron.website is the trademark still valid elsewhere outside of Germany? In the UK Aspirin is the generic name
