Dealing with old electrics is kind of interesting.
Some of the old stuff is this red wire with translucent insulation. I have never seen this stuff.
I doubt that it is silicone insulation. It should be PVC or maybe an intermediate step between textile-based insulation and PVC.
Does anyone know this stuff? Austria, probably mid-50s, maybe replaced in the 70s.

Undo one step to do three new ones. Old wires are out (plain PVC by the looks of it), new wires are in without any drama, and I have a motion sensor ready to install. This is my favourite step. 😁

@VintageProject@oldbytes.space Very sure PVC if it has any kind of bright color, that isolation got use since the 1940s (the period of using rubber isolation after textile was short, it was already crumbing away then) If you want to know you can make a Beilstein test to be sure
