I'll be speaking at this briefing on behalf of one of my clients.
Joint venture is wrong for so many reasons. We should punish people for what they do and what they intend. Not what other people do and intend.
Using joint venture to convict people is the opposite of personal responsibility.
It's always about the racism.
Predictably, juries are more likely to judge white defendants individually and more willing to find shared intent when the defendants are BIPOC. /2

We Are Joint Venture is an amazing effort led by the people who are directly impacted by this failed, unjust doctrine. The proposed legislation would allow impacted people who were convicted solely as joint venturers, who never killed anyone, to ask a court to resentence them. Because in Massachusetts, if you are convicted of murder as a joint venturer that's life in prison.
