In related news, Microsoft is offering thousands of its most senior employees an early buyout plan to get them off the payroll. ... only a few months after announcing to everyone how their new focus is QA and making sure everything works the right way, every time, reliably. I'm sure there won't be any downsides to THAT.

@jimsalter@fosstodon.org this is happening across the entire technology industry. The business folks have decided that the reputational risk of allowing quality to go down the shitter is irrelevant compared to the cost savings that they can realize. I remain very grateful to be working in academia at the moment.

@jimsalter@fosstodon.org how many of these people are actually in technical roles? if you started at MSFT when you were 30 and you've worked there for 20 years you'd be 50, and that's 20 years of service so 50+20 = 70 so you qualify for the buyout most of the people who qualify are probably over 50 years of age so far everyone my wife has met that has qualified for the buyout are like 50 years old and they do paper pushing / management jobs (i work from home, she exists in the real world and meets these people in her job)
