@jessta@aus.social My brother in law moved to Perth from Argentina like 4 years ago. Last year we went to visit and he had no idea how to use PT. Our trip to the city was his first train trip Australia.

@jessta@aus.social At the school I taught at, the Year 9s had a program with lots of activities, but one ended with a 'race around the world' type activity using public transport. The practice event was in Canberra and then we did one in Sydney too as part of their Sydney visit. Most of the kids had never used public transport. Most loved the activities - some were just, why can't I call an uber?

@jessta@aus.social That's a brilliant observation. I have never thought of that. Yes, there are probably people who don't really know how to begin or how to make public transport 'connect' for them.

@jessta@aus.social it's a cultural thing. I was on public transport from year 9 onwards. They have escorted trips for seniors, maybe this should be expanded to junior high school students.

@jessta@aus.social Sometimes I've been on a long-distance train journey in the USA and one of my American fellow passengers is having their first train trip ever! Amazing.

@jessta@aus.social Feels like a window into how much our society has divided itself. Australia feels increasingly isolated by our new found wealth. Some folks just aren't in the habit of sharing common spaces. We're all individuals now.
