The incentives are wrong. Management is paid to manage, not to do tasks. If they don't hold meetings and move stuff around on the board, they're not doing their job. And to whatever extent they solve the underlying problem, they only succeed in making themselves superfluous.

    @mjd I dunno, the better managers I've experienced have mostly seen their job as making it easier for other people to do stuff. I suspect my current manager has a priority list somewhere, I just have a bunch of assigned issues in a track. And weekly (ish) chats about what I'm doing, what I'm supposed to be doing, and things he hopes I might do in the future. New task: email @simontatham to compliment him on the usefulness of pUtty :)
