I say this with deep respect for the people who view AI technology as dangerous and upheaving. It is. But some technological changes can&#39;t be undone. We&#39;ll never be pre-steam engine again, or pre-electricity. AI is here and we have to cope with it, whether we like it or not.

@danielpunkass@mastodon.social yes _and_ history is littered with technology that was not sustainable for mass consumption and thus relegated to niche markets or even just being abandoned. I'm not sure the generative transformer-based AI story is finished being written and where in these buckets it will land.

@danielpunkass@mastodon.social that’s true, but what’s the end-game here? With Google there was an incentive to come up with new materials so you could be found. With AI, the incentives are much less because you’re just ground to a paste to be fed into the model… And the economics of it just don’t make sense (yet).

@danielpunkass@mastodon.social That AI is inevitable in some form is true but vague and only part of the picture. Specifically, are chatbots and AI search assistants inevitable? It is possible that mass numbers of people will outgrow chatbots. And that mass numbers of people will realize they have more control with a traditional search engine, and companies will step up to meet that demand.

@danielpunkass@mastodon.social I recall how experts proclaimed VR as an inevitable transformative explosion (Metaverse!), based on sci-fi tales where humans raced to never have to imagine again. I think we can all agree that turned out to be a dud.

@danielpunkass@mastodon.social AI is here today but not in a sustainable way (it doesn't cover its own costs and causes a lot of damage). We still need to figure out how to keep the good parts on the long term.

@danielpunkass@mastodon.social If it's so inevitable, why do companies keep forcing it on users who mostly don't want it, and make it impossible to turn off/remove? Why can't it stand on it's own merits in the situations where it actually *is* useful?
